Squealing usually comes from worn or glazed pads, grinding means metal is rubbing on metal, and vibration through the pedal or steering wheel points to uneven brake discs. Grinding is the urgent one, so get it checked as soon as you can and drive gently until then. A light squeal for the first few stops on a humid morning is normally surface rust and goes away by itself.
What does a squeal mean?
Many brake pads have a small steel tab that touches the disc once the pad gets thin. The squeal is deliberate and tells you the pads are near the end. Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche mostly use an electronic wear sensor instead, which turns on a brake pad warning on the dashboard. A sensor that has worn through gets replaced along with the pads.
Glazed pads squeal too. Heavy braking can leave a hard, shiny surface on the pad that grips less well. Missing anti-squeal shims, dry contact points, cheap pads and heavy brake dust are other common causes.
Morning squeal is common in Dubai's humid months. Moisture leaves a thin layer of rust on the discs overnight or after a car wash, and the first few stops scrape it off. If the noise is gone within a few minutes of driving, it is nothing to worry about.
What does grinding mean?
A deep grinding or scraping noise when you brake usually means the pad material is gone and the steel backing plate is rubbing on the disc. Braking distances get longer, and every stop cuts deeper into the disc. A pad change then becomes pads and discs, and if it goes on long enough the caliper can be damaged too.
A small stone caught between the disc and the dust shield makes a similar sound, often a scrape that carries on when you are not braking. That is a simple fix, but you cannot tell the two apart without taking the wheel off, so treat any grinding as urgent.
What does vibration when braking mean?
A shake through the steering wheel when you brake from speed most likely comes from the front discs. A pulse in the brake pedal or through the seat can come from the rear. The cause is uneven disc thickness, often called warped discs, which builds up from heat, uneven pad deposits or wheel bolts tightened unevenly.
If the car vibrates at speed even when you are not braking, the tyres, wheel balance or suspension are more likely. Worn suspension bushes can also make a small brake vibration feel much worse.
How urgent is it?
- Squeal for the first few stops, then gone: normal, no action needed.
- Squeal on every stop, or a brake pad warning on the dashboard: book in within a week or so.
- Vibration when braking: book in soon, as it tends to get worse.
- Grinding: as soon as possible. Drive gently and leave a longer gap to the car in front.
- A soft or sinking pedal, a red brake warning light, or the car pulling hard to one side: stop driving and get help.
A red brake warning can mean low brake fluid or a fault in the system. Check the handbrake is fully released first; if the light stays on, do not drive the car.
What does a brake job include?
A proper brake job starts with an inspection and replaces only what is worn. It covers:
- Taking the wheels off and measuring both the inner and outer pads, since one can wear faster than the other.
- Measuring disc thickness against the minimum stamped on the disc, and checking for deep grooves, a raised lip or cracks.
- Cleaning and greasing the caliper slide pins and pad contact points so the pads move freely.
- Checking the calipers, hoses and brake pipes for leaks or sticking.
- Testing the brake fluid for moisture. Fluid absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point, and Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche generally call for fresh fluid every two years.
- Fitting new wear sensors where needed, then a test drive to bed in the new pads.
On a Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Porsche, the discs tend to reach their minimum thickness around the same time as the pads, so changing both together is common. On many other cars the discs last longer, and measuring them shows whether they can stay. Stop-start traffic wears pads faster than open highway driving, so cars used mostly in the city need checking more often.
The price depends on the car, whether it needs pads only or pads and discs, front, rear or both, and the parts you pick, genuine or OEM. We send the quote on WhatsApp and start only after you approve it.
WhatsApp or call us with the make, model and year and describe the noise, or send a short video with the sound. We pick the car up for free anywhere in Dubai during working hours. If the pedal feels soft or sinks, do not drive it; message us first.
Questions
How long do brake pads last in Dubai?
There is no fixed number. It depends on the car's weight, the pad type and how much stop-start driving you do, and heavier cars driven mostly in the city wear pads fastest. Having them measured at every service is the reliable way to know.
Do I need new discs every time I change the pads?
Not always. If the discs are above their minimum thickness, have no deep grooves and do not cause vibration, they can stay for another set of pads. The mechanic measures them and tells you before anything is ordered.
Why are my wheels covered in black dust?
That is brake dust from the pads and discs wearing. The pads fitted to many German cars produce a lot of it, so dark wheels within days are normal. Low-dust pads are available for many models, though they can feel slightly different under braking.
Why does my car pull to one side when I brake?
Common causes are a sticking caliper, a collapsed brake hose, or pads contaminated with oil or brake fluid on one side. Uneven tyre pressures and alignment problems can cause it too. Because it changes how the car stops, get it checked soon.
