What does the check engine light mean, and is it safe to drive?

A flashing check engine light means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Ease off and WhatsApp us to book a scan.

By the Gomaa Garage workshop team · Updated

The check engine light means the engine computer has stored a fault code, usually from the ignition, fuel, air intake or emissions system. A steady light is rarely an emergency, but get the code read within a few days. A flashing light means the engine is misfiring badly enough to damage the catalytic converter, so ease off and stop driving as soon as it is safe.

What is the check engine light telling you?

It is the amber engine-shaped symbol on the dashboard, and some cars spell out "Check engine" instead. It comes on when a sensor reading stays outside the range the engine computer expects. The computer then stores a fault code for the system involved.

A code tells you which system has the problem. A lean mixture code, for example, can come from a cracked air hose, a dirty airflow sensor or a weak fuel pump, so the code alone does not tell you which part to replace.

The light also comes on for a second or two when you switch on the ignition. That is a bulb check, and it should go out once the engine starts.

Solid or flashing: what is the difference?

A solid light means a fault has been logged. The car may drive normally, or you may notice rough idling, higher fuel use or a hesitation when you pull away. Book it in within a few days.

A flashing light means one or more cylinders are misfiring right now. Unburnt fuel goes into the exhaust and burns inside the catalytic converter, which can overheat and break up inside. On a Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Porsche that is an expensive part, so avoid hard acceleration and stop when you can do it safely. If the light flashes and then turns steady, the misfire has eased but the fault is still there.

What causes a check engine light in Dubai heat?

Summer heat under the bonnet ages rubber and plastic parts quickly and shortens battery life. Common causes include:

  • Ignition coils and spark plugs. Coils tend to fail sooner in high heat, and a dead coil is one of the usual reasons for a flashing light.
  • Air leaks. Rubber intake and vacuum hoses harden and split, and many German engines use plastic crankcase ventilation (PCV) parts that crack or fail with age. Extra air gets in, the engine runs lean and the computer sets a code. A whistle at idle is sometimes the clue.
  • Oxygen sensors. They measure the exhaust gases and wear out over time, and a slow sensor can raise fuel use before you notice anything else.
  • Evaporative system leaks. The simplest one is a fuel cap left loose after filling up.
  • Thermostat and coolant temperature sensor faults. Many BMW engines use an electronically controlled thermostat that fails with age.
  • A weak battery. Low voltage can make a modern car log faults in several systems at once, sometimes with a row of warning lights.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

With a steady light and a car that feels normal, short and gentle trips are usually fine until you get it checked. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and do not leave it for weeks. A small fault left alone can damage other parts, and while the light is already on, you will not see a second fault when it appears.

Stop driving and get help if any of these come with the light:

  • The light is flashing.
  • The car suddenly loses power or will not rev past a certain point. This is limp mode, where the computer restricts the engine to protect it.
  • The temperature gauge climbs or a red warning light comes on.
  • You smell burning, see smoke, or the engine shakes badly.

Red warning lights, such as oil pressure or coolant temperature, are more urgent than the amber engine light. If one of those comes on, pull over safely and switch off.

What does a diagnostic involve?

It starts with a scan tool plugged into the diagnostic (OBD) port, which on most cars is under the dashboard on the driver's side. The tool reads the stored codes and the freeze frame data, a snapshot of speed, engine temperature and other readings at the moment the fault was logged.

A basic code reader only sees generic engine codes. For Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche we use dealer-level diagnostic tools. They read the manufacturer's own codes from the car's other control units too, such as the gearbox, ABS and airbag modules, and can test individual components.

After the scan, the mechanic watches live data with the engine running and tests the suspect parts. That might mean a smoke test to find an air leak, swapping ignition coils between cylinders to see if the misfire follows, or measuring the voltage at a sensor, so the failed part is confirmed before anything gets replaced.

Once the cause is clear, we send the quote on WhatsApp. Work starts only after you approve it, and you choose between genuine and OEM parts.

Can you check anything yourself?

If the light came on soon after filling up, check that the fuel cap is tight and clicked. The light will not go out straight away; it usually clears by itself after several drives once the system seals again. If it came on right after other work on the car, mention that when you book, because a connector or hose disturbed during a job is a possible cause.

To book a check, WhatsApp or call us with the make, model and year, and send a photo of the dashboard with the light on. We collect the car for free from anywhere in Dubai during working hours. If the light is flashing, message us before you drive anywhere.

Questions

My check engine light is on but the car drives fine. What should I do?

Get the code read within a few days anyway. Many faults that trigger the light, such as an oxygen sensor or a small evaporative leak, do not change how the car feels. Some of them raise fuel use or, left for months, can damage the catalytic converter.

Why did the check engine light come on after an oil change or a new battery?

After an oil change, a loose oil filler cap or a connector knocked during the job can set a code. After a battery change, some cars log faults because the control units lost power, and the light may clear after a few drives. If it stays on for more than a few days, have it scanned.

Can I clear the code myself with a cheap code reader?

You can, and the light will go out for a while. If the fault is still there it comes back, and clearing it also wipes the freeze frame data that helps find the cause. Leave the light on and let the mechanic read it first.

Is the check engine light the same as the service light?

No. The service light, often a spanner symbol or a "service due" message, is a reminder based on time or distance and only needs resetting after a service. The check engine light means the computer has found a fault.
